In response to the flurry of doubtful headlines about Magic Leap today, set off by an unflattering article from The Information, Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz released a short blog post quickly detailing what to expect from the company over the next year. The gist comes down to this: big things are happening in 2017.
It has been a while since I wrote to you all about what's been going on at Magic Leap. The team and I are humbled by the overwhelming interest and support for our vision and technology. All of us are pouring very long hours, heart, and soul into making something new—how we will enable your digital and physical worlds to come together in a very personal, social, and magical way.
Of the things he mentioned, they've completed their first "product equivalent" (PEQ) build of the target form factor, and will be initiating a bigger PEQ run to use for "engineering and manufacturing verification/validation testing, early reliability/quality testing, production line speed, and a bunch of other important parameters."
He also pointed out that they are going full steam ahead "development of software, applications, cool creative experiences, and overall operational readiness."
Could this be a deflection from the negative press? Absolutely. That does not mean it's false. Rather, based on a few factors we here at NextReality have reported in recent weeks— looking for a supply chain manager and hiring field engineers—it's easy to speculate these points to be true. Only time will tell.
